“Caught in the Fog” is one of my favorite paintings, or work of art for that matter. It took me many hours and many days in class to finish. Because I used acrylics, I had to take the painting one step at a time, painting one portion and then letting it dry. When I did this painting I was really inspired by Vincent Van Gough, his work to me is very interesting because most of his paintings are abstract and sometimes abstract pieces speak volumes louder then realism, because their can always be more than one interpretation of work. That is the main reason why I chose to do an abstract painting, and that is why I chose to talk about this piece of work.
When I started painting “Caught in the Fog” I didn’t have a clear mental picture of what I was trying to create. I sort of just created a figure of a man and everything after that just came together. I named it “Caught in the Fog” as a metaphor for life. In the painting the man or the figure is hard to depict, but the harder you look the more evident the figure becomes. The color of the figure and the back ground blend together so the whole painting is black, white, and gray. It’s metaphoric in the sense that sometimes we as people get too caught up in life, people are just surviving instead of living. We get too focused on our jobs, school, and our material possessions, that we can’t fully embrace everything life has to offer. In this day and age everyone has similar goals, and a similar mind set, and those are to go to college, get a good job, get rich, live in a beautiful house, and have miraculous possessions. But there is more to life then material possessions and getting rich. And because everyone has these goals, everyone blends together, and then it is hard to depict the individual, as the figure is in the painting. Life is about not taking things for granted, and appreciating the things in life you have. Life’s about valuing every minute and being grateful you’re alive. When I am on my death bed I will not judge my life on how much money I made or how many nice things I bought. And everyone who does judge the value of their life on those principals is, “Caught in the Fog” Because they missed the big picture of life.
In all of my pieces I try to have an over arching theme that if thought about enough, the observer too, can comprehend the idea I was trying to convey. For me art without meaning isn’t art. Art is a piece of work that influences, inspires, and enlightens. Art is not just figures, or color, or lines. Art sends a message.
