Drawing and Painting 3
Camille O'Connor Dazed Once Upon Twinkles
Camille O’Connor Artist StatementI like to think of myself as a unique artist. I love drawing from the emotion that I am feeling right at that moment. When you look at a piece of mine, at first it looks like I just randomly threw a bunch of stuff on paper like a collage, but everything I draw has a meaning in it. I just hide it so that whoever looks at it doesn’t find out what it means right away, I think it makes it more interesting that way. I’m always drawing on my friend’s stuff: shoes, backpacks, notebooks, binders, water bottles, hands…etc. I have also designed logos and tattoos for a few people. You can say that art is almost like my anti-drug. I always have a pen and I’m constantly drawing on my hand. Since I was little I have loved art and I have always been creative, my strength is graphics and that’s what I hope to have a career in one day.
The piece that I selected is called Dazed Once Upon Twinkles. I used Sharpies and professional permanent markers on cotton rag paper. It is 14” wide and 22 ½” tall. I chose this piece because I put a lot of thought into it and I think that it totally represents my style. I want to have a career in art as a graphic designer. I would really like to design snowboard/skateboard graphics, and build from there. I was inspired by love and hate for this piece. I think it’s not really noticeable, but when you look a certain parts of the drawing you would really guess that to be the theme as well. I’m inspired by love in most of my work. I use different colors and shapes to express that. My favorite medium is pen.
I used these elements in this piece not only because they are my favorite but also because they are bold and eye catching. I used certain things to represent love and certain things to represent hate. The elements in this piece are: line, color, shape, value, and a little space. The principles in this piece are emphasis, harmony/unity, pattern, proportion, and variety. I was trying to give the viewer the option of making it have their own meaning. That’s how I think art should always be taken anyway. I liked making the blank paper into a colorful display of whatever emotion the viewer wants to feel from it.
I spent about maybe four hours total on it. But not back to back. I believe that this is a successful work of art because it was worked on with a lot of time. I think that this piece totally represents me because it’s my style and I repeat a lot of things that I have done in the past including the markers I used and such. I overall am pleased with the outcome of this piece of art. It represents what I wanted it to and you can tell that its mine. I hope that can inspire others to find an interest in art, and I really hope to have a career in graphic design. I like my independent project, I am glad that it finished it like I did.
