AP Studio Art Breadth #5


Breadth 5  Due Monday 9-26-11

Project: Objectives:

·         Students will create a piece representing texture through the use of contrasting patterns draw from observation - make several figure studies

·         work on figure proportion

·         gain appreciation for work of Peter Max - 1960s artwork

·         explore pattern and color in creating an abstracted figure composition

Media: inks, acrylics, watercolors/pencils, fine-tip sharpies

Vellum/Bristol board

Vocabulary: repeat, combine, disguise, mythologize, pattern,

motif, space, shape, texture, symbols.

Project:  From a selected theme, make a line drawing of a figure (Try a figure you may not have used before).

Divide the background space and parts of the image into smaller increments.
Fill up to 90% ninety percent of the shapes with different decorative patterns but allow some shapes to remain un-textured. Patterns tend to disguise images and flatten pictorial space. Combining different shapes, patterns, textures with different media, scale should be a key element as well.


Reading: DCA, Chapter 6, Colston, pp. 22-23, pp. 62-74

Sketchbook:

1.    Make up 10 different patterns using, ink, markers, watercolors/pencils, & acrylics.

2.    Draw the figure several times using the tips on the back page.

3.    Glue various materials in you SB and draw the figure over them

Blog: photograph your  pieces so far and upload them to your blog, write a comment on how you think they came out.  Comment on the readings.
